Maintain Your Motivation with Affirmations

May 10, 2010 By Karen Ficarelli

Is there fire in your fitness program? Do you burn with desire to workout every day? If not, what’s happened to the drive that you had in the beginning? Learn to maintain your motivation by saying affirmations. An affirmation is a solemn and positive declaration that you tell yourself to create a change in the way you feel and think.

Here are some of the most common affirmations:
“I am going to be who I choose to be.”
“I love and accept myself for who I am.”
“Exercise makes me healthy in body and spirit.”
“I become better in each day in every way.”
“I love how exercise makes me feel.”
“Exercise makes my clothes fit better.”
“I am stronger because I exercise.”
“Today I will exercise for 15 additional minutes.”

Now, to enjoy the effects of affirmations in our lives, it is good to know the right way to do the affirmations. Here are some of the helpful guidelines:

1. Come up with an affirmation that you feel comfortable saying. You can use the affirmations above or find one that works for your specific needs. If you like, you can write your own affirmation. All you have to do is make it powerful and convincing when you say the message to yourself. You must believe it is possible.

2. State it in the present tense. Affirmations are most effective when said in the present since they imply an event or task in the present. The present convinces you more than the future tense that is still to take place.

3. Choose positive words of encouragement. Refrain from using the words “no” or “not” in your sentences since they indicate the things that you have to remove. Focus more on the things that you want rather than what you fear happening.

5. Repetition is essential to making affirmations work. Your affirmation is a mantra that you will have to keep telling yourself so your subconscious is convinced that this is something that you want to change.

6. Put your heart into it. You have to have more feeling when you say your affirmations. You should not be just reciting something without feeling. Be passionate as you say the words to yourself and take the meaning to your heart so you won’t forget.

7. Believe and persevere. Belief in the affirmations is something that may not come right away. Continue to repeat it believing that you can bring about this improvement in your life.

Affirmations can work for every aspect of your life. Your affirmations don’t just have to entail your fitness goals; positive affirmations train your brain to bring about the changes that you want. Whether it be fitness, family, financial or business related, affirmations will work to help you succeed.

Positive Words of Praise Never Hurt

April 16, 2010 By Karen Ficarelli

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.

This little idiom chanted on playgrounds around the country is far from accurate. While words alone cannot hurt physically, they can hurt so deeply on an emotional level that a person can become physically ill.

Many people who have been bullied in school say they would prefer sticks and stones because they only hurt for a little while, but the pain caused from hateful words can last for a lifetime. Many adults suffer from low self-esteem or other personality disorders stemming from name-calling or other verbal abuse that was unleashed on them during their childhood.

It sometimes takes years to undo the damage from abusive language. This form of mistreatment is often not recognized and runs rampant throughout an entire family. It is not uncommon for members of the same family to have similar problems such as anxiety disorders, depression, chemical dependency or alcoholism.

Positive words of praise can sometimes help to alleviate feelings of low self worth and issues with self-esteem. Similar to cheering someone on, positive affirmations can help to change your world. If you’ve ever noticed the great big football players rallying the crowd to cheer, you can understand the power of positive words and encouragement. We all crave it, so why not give some to yourself?

Affirmations are power-packed positive words written out and spoken aloud. You must speak them aloud to get the full effect. If you don’t want to write your own, there are many suggestions on some of my other posts to get you started. The important thing is that you start each day with a “Can Do, Anything is possible” kind of attitude. In fact that’s the mantra of successful people.

Words can hurt…but words possess the magic cure to make all things possible. Speaking affirmations to yourself will give you a positive start to each day that will help to reinforce your spirit to withstand negative attitudes that come your way.

Getting Fit With Affirmations

March 1, 2010 By Karen Ficarelli

We all know the health benefits that fitness offers, so what’s holding you back? Could it be that you just don’t have the motivation that it takes to stay commitment to an exercise program? You hate to even get started on something that you probably won’t finish—right? Now hold on there, how do you know that you won’t stick with it this time? Why have you given up before you’ve even begun the journey?

Finding the motivation to start an exercise program isn’t always easy. It’s hard to break old habits like watching your favorite television shows while relaxing on the couch. Daily responsibilities seem to suck up all of your free time and it just never seems the right time to begin exercising. The problem is, you know that it’s essential to good health to exercise regularly and you really would like to get started.

Affirmations can help get you moving. Now, before you dismiss this, hear me out. Stating positive facts aloud to yourself has a powerful effect on your sub-conscious. Talking about the muscles that you are going to work and imagining the effect of the exercise on the muscle helps to give you the ultimate workout advantage. Your mind focuses on that particular muscle and triggers the appropriate hormonal release to allow you the most benefit.

Try these affirmations when you need to begin an exercise program:
• I will exercise for 30 minutes this morning.
• I love the way exercise makes me feel.
• I love the way I look when I exercise regularly.
• I feel better after I exercise.
• I am thankful that I can walk.

Try these affirmations as you continue through your exercise program:
• I love the way exercise makes me feel.
• My body is changing because of exercise.
• My spirit soars after I exercise.
• I am amazed at my own abilities.
• I will walk/workout for 15 additional minutes today.

These sample affirmations will get you started, but as you progress, you will no doubt come up with your own positive power words. It is important that you believe in what you are saying. Think about the words that you are saying and buy into the belief.

Words speak volumes and can enrich every part of your life. Try affirmations for fitness, diet, health, financial or personal. Write them down and keep them in a book for quick reference. They really do make a difference and you’ll see that it’s easy to get fit with affirmations.

Affirmations for Dieting

February 5, 2010 By Karen Ficarelli

• I love myself as I am, regardless of how much I weigh.
• I toss out negative thoughts.
• I choose to be thin and healthy.
• I now see myself as being thin and healthy.
• Everyday I get more control of my weight.
• My thoughts influence my body.
• I eject any negative thoughts about my body.
• I choose to think positively about my body.
• My beliefs create my physical reality.
• I know that I control my weight.
• My new reality includes my desired weight and shape.
• In my mind I am now slim, healthy and attractive.
• My physical reality is quick to follow.
• I will attain and maintain my desired weight.
• I honor my body.
• I am so thankful for all that I have.

What is it about these words that make them an asset to any successful fitness or weight loss program? Can just speaking these words empower you to stay on a diet? Well to begin with, your diet is your way of life. It is the way that you eat. Women choosing a healthy diet shouldn’t be just about losing weight. Because once you have lost the desired weight, I’m hoping you’ll continue eating healthy with a diet that’s good for you.

Affirmations are about empowering yourself to find the commitment to make a desired change in your life. Powerful words that are used to build a positive self talk. By consistently repeating positive affirmations to yourself, you create positive subconscious thoughts that lead to positive actions.

Instead of negative words that conjure up guilt, frustration or sadness; positive, productive thoughts will replay automatically throughout your life. Each time they replay, they’ll reinforce the new positive inner-image you have of yourself and your life in general. By replacing old, negative thinking with new, positive subconscious thoughts you’ll have access to the endless resources of positive energy that lies within you.

When you use positive affirmations, you must believe them and you must feel them. Allow yourself to fully experience each affirmation. Enjoy the positive force that they offer. Assume each affirmation to be true in your physical reality. Feel the positive emotions and allow your positive actions to follow.
